33 Occipital Nerves Diagram

Occipital neuralgia is a rare type of chronic headache disorder. These nerves transmit information back and forth between their originating location in the spinal column and the brain.

Distribution of the greater, lesser, and third occipital

The most common symptom is suboccipital pain radiating to the back of the head and occasionally down the back of the neck.

Occipital nerves diagram. Emerging from between bones of the spine in the upper neck the two greater occipital nerves make their way through muscles at the back of the head and into the scalp. The occipital nerves run from the top. Occipital neuralgia is a form of sharp and shooting head pain that radiates from the top of the spinal cord to the scalp.

You might feel pain in the back of your head or the base of your skull. Other nerves supply these regions. There are two types.

This nerve arises from between the first and second vertebrae along with the lesser occipital nerve. Posterior primary divisions of the upper three cervical nerves. Both are important in supplying nerve connections to the head and scalp.

This nerve arises from between the first and second cervical vertebrae along with the lesser occipital nerve. In human biology the occipital nerve refers to one of two main nerves of the spine specifically called the greater and the lesser occipital nerve. They originate between the second and third vertebrae of the spine.

Occipital neuralgia is a condition in which the nerves that run from the top of the spinal cord up through the scalp called the occipital nerves are inflamed or injured. People can confuse it with a migraine or other types of headache because the symptoms can be similar. The occipital nerves collectively share a variety of functions that stem from the parent function which acts as the main nerve supply of the scalp and most of the head.

It is caused by injury or damage to the occipital nerve or compression to the nerve root. It occurs when pain stems from the occipital region and spreads through the occipital nerves. Involves the greater and lesser occipital nerves located in the back of the scalp and can produce neck pain as well as headache.

They sometimes reach nearly as far forward as the forehead but do not cover the face or the area near the ears. The greater occipital nerve is a spinal nerve specifically the medial branch of the dorsal primary ramus of cervical spinal nerve 2. The greater occipital nerve is the medial branch of the dorsal primary ramus of the c2 spinal nerve.
